In this tutorial, we will use two geographical layers downloadable from the NaturalEarth database online and already available in the /dss_course_dataset folder:

/dss_course_dataset/qgis/1-basics

Files to be used are:

ne_10m_admin_0_countries.shp (world countries)
ne_10m_populated_places_simple.shp (world main cities)

1. Opening, selecting and closing vector layers

See video tutorial either on your local copy or on YouTube QGIS-Open Vector Layers

2. Understand relationship between Map and Attribute table through features selection

In that tutorial we will use the following layer:

ne_10m_admin_0_countries.shp (world countries)

See video tutorial either on your local copy or on YouTube QGIS-Map view vs Attribute table

3. Navigating the map

In that tutorial we will use the following layer:

ne_10m_admin_0_countries.shp (world countries)

See video tutorial either on your local copy or on YouTube QGIS-Map navigation

4. Styling layers through the ‘Properties Dialog box’

Files to be used are:

ne_10m_admin_0_countries.shp (world countries)
ne_10m_populated_places_simple.shp (world main cities)

See video tutorial either on your local copy or on YouTube QGIS-Styling layers through properties dialog box

5. Saving styling, layers as a project

Once you styled your layers, open several vector layers, … if you close QGIS you will loose all your settings. To save a specific arrangements of layers and settings you need to save it as a QGIS project. To do so, simply go to:

Menu "File" -> "Save Project As"

and choose a name for your QGIS project. The extension for a QGIS project is “.qgis”

Once saved, you can re-open it using of course:

Meny "File" -> "Open Project ..."
